This Is Awkward...

It feels like it has been forever. So I'm not gonna lie, I have been slacking off for the past month weeks. But that doesn't account for the past three months. I have been doing a lot of studying in perspective, construction and basic drawing. You might be thinking, why would an "Artist" need to study drawing? Well, I know I can draw, that isn't the problem. I know that I have to get a lot better to take on the task of creating my own written, drawn, inked, and painted comic book(s).
I had an idea to just sculpt the characters, pose them in static environments, then put word bubbles to illustrate a story. Through many hours of sculpting in ZBrush and modeling in Maya, I came to the conclusion that that would be a stupid idea! Perhaps the stupidest ever! You're an artist, and that would take all of the fun out drawing! Don't get me wrong, you can create some cool stuff in ZBrush and Maya, but nothing I can do in those programs can compare the dynamic art I can spit out onto a blank canvas!
So I broke down to the basics once again, and busted out the o'l pencil and sketchbook.
Painting has not been a priority, because I felt I was lacking in the line department. But enough with the excuses! I will come around, and I will finish the first issue, even if it takes me a year!
Here is some random crap I did a few weeks ago. It helped me to make some crap, so I can appreciate the awesome I will create.

S'more TMNT Madness!!!

It's been so long since I've posted anything, but I didn't just want to post another sketch or crappy painting. I wanted to post something I've been working very hard to master.... and that is ZBrush!
I've been busting my azz, pushing one of my other projects aside, so that I can feel comfortable with ZBrush. I don't know why, but I just love sculpting now. I still draw and paint, but this adds a whole new method of composing pieces that I would have never tried before. I've so fare learned to use Maya, Mudbox, Google Sketchup, and so far ZBrush is what I'm drawn to. Maya is cool for the rendering and creating hard edged objects, but ZBrush feels like I'm back to sculpting that big clump of red clay my mom used to use around the house.
There will be a lot more to come, but this is it for now....

I'll confess though, the majority of my time has been dedicated to learning ZBrush inside out. I took a break after that treacherous month of working with Mudbox, creating my Warrior character... A learning experience, but very very treacherous! It's now ZBrush all the way baby! I like it just for fooling around, and since I've spent so much time self teaching, I might as well go all the way with it.

Here is my Frag. I did about 10 render passes in ZBrush and came up with this. I think this is the style I wanted for my comic, but I might make it more cell shady looking in the final comics.

Finally finished! Took a bit more time with detail on this one.
As I began, I had a hard time with the color values, so I decided to scrap it and do a monochromatic painting and the apply color later.
I like the way it turned out. Not as much motion as the Raphael one, but still good.

100th Post! Time To Party!

I love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! When I was a kid, I loved drawing my own version of them, performing random acts of violence against the Foot Clan. I loved those ultra violent comic books when I was growing up, but the Turtles I knew didn't really do that stuff.... Until now!
I'm trying to come up with a major Motion Painting that encompasses the essence of the Ninja Turtles, and is wicked awesome to look at.
This painting I worked on yesterday and today is just a concept of what I want to really paint. It's not as realistic as I imagined, but I'll save that for the final idea.
I've included the Line art and the Livestream videos. It's pretty long though.

Throat Rippin' Time!!!

Before finishing all the UV painting and sculpting, like a smart person would, I decided to screw around with some poses and lighting. Came up with a few cool effects.
I wanted him to look like he just got through rippin' a throat, and is getting up and walking away, like nothing happend.
Almost done though! It's a kind of bitter sweet feeling. I want to finish this thing and be done with it, but I also don't want to keep working on it... If that makes sense.

Sooo Much TO POST!

I've been really busy lately, working on this Mudbox contest. So far so good. I've hit several walls, and have been able to get over them relatively quickly. But I must say, I really miss my 2D work!
I can't wait until I'm finally finished this sculpture. I've poured hours and hours of time into it. So even if I don't place, I can say that I now know how to model and sculpt in Maya and Mudbox.
Here are some of the steps I've taken to get to where I am so far. So Enjoy!

The initial warrior concept got scrapped pretty quickly, once I learned more about 3D modeling. I was under the impression that you could just start with a head base mesh, then slap it onto a body base mesh. Boy was I wrong. It's pretty funny though.
Guess it all turned out for the best.

This new idea came from a bunch of little ideas, slapped together.
I am still struggling with Mudbox. For some reason, the brushes act different when I'm modeling different parts of the body.
For instance, I'll be sculpting with the Wax brush, and then all of a sudden, it will turn in to the Amplify brush set to 100 strength and screw everything up. I almost gave up at that point, but I kept pushing. I think it has something to do with how I begin modeling the base mesh at a low poly count.....

I then slapped on some color to give him some life. Even then I still ran into problems, where when I'm painting in one place, and it won't even allow me to apply any color.

Applied more color layers, but left out the junk.
He'll be wearing pants.

So I decided to add a weapon into the mix, and what better than a blunt stone axe.
I did a rough sketch of an axe, and transferred it to Maya.
This was my first attempt at using Maya, and it is nuts. I never thought I'd be able to use a program like Maya, since I'm so used to 2d programs like Photoshop and Painter. Took about 10 tries to just get the basic base mesh down. I kept generating sides with 3 and 5 sides. But I eventually got the hang of it. I liked sculpting this one, but I ran into the same problem with the iratic uneven areas...
I designed the axe with a Blunt stone edge, good for Choppin' Necks. As well as a hook, good for Rippin' Throats.

Decided to give the guy some pants, and some o'l school Chucks.
Also, when I opened his mouth, he didn't have any teeth, so I sculpted and painted two spheres into a set of chompers..... Also good for Rippin' throats!

Late Night WIP

I've been working on this sculpture for some time now, and almost punched myself in the face when I decided to start over again.
My idea changed, so I ran with it. 3D sculpture has been very difficult to master, and it has forced me to push my skills. I'm sticking to just the one program (Mudbox 2011), and I've found it is very limited, compared to Zbrush. It forces me to plan out my sculpting more strategically.
I'm about 3/4 complete, and now on to the clothes, and then the environment.

Tom Green Portrait Art

A little while back, I visited the House Of Comedy in the Mall Of America. Mr. Tom Green was the headliner, and the show was AWESOME!!!
About a month prior, I decided to paint a portrait for for him, since he's been my favorite comedians.
I used to watch his show on the Comedy Network, and he always made me laugh.
So after the show, I was lucky enough to meet Tom, and presented him with a print of my painting.
He said it was good, but I worked on it for so damn long, I'm tired of looking at it. But I hope he kept it.

Today was really tough! I've discovered that Mudbox takes a heavy toll on my processor. While running iTunes, Safari and Skype, I tried to save my progress and it crashed!!!
I'm trying to limit my application use while sculpting.
I had a chance to rework his clothes, feet and hands. Knocking up the resolution to a 4.

I've finally buckled down to enter the CG Hub and Mudbox contest. The topic is "Warrior", so it's wide open, other than the fact that I have had to learn a new 3D sculpting program. But for $5000 CASH, I'm on it!
I enjoy Mudbox, it is similar to ZBrush, besides not being able to model my own armatures.

Terrorizing Teddy Bears

I've finally finished it! Some time ago, I began a piece that would be a gift for my niece. I began sketching and arranging the design, rigorously! Finally, when I did have the perfect design, I got tired of it and started from scratch again.
I was hell bent on painting it in Painter, but I figured it would be quicker to finish in Photoshop. I was dead wrong. In between my studies, learning ZBrush and Mudbox, In total, I pounded about a good 20-30 hours into it.
Even now I'm not completely satisfied with it, but its time to move on.

Painting Hangups

I've been doing a lot of painting in Painter XI and have noticed a few things about how my process changes. I've tried to free my tight brush strokes to start laying on color, to make the image readable. I found laying down sloppy colors is a lot easier in Photoshop, for some odd reason. Considering I like to keep the colors tight, and almost cell shaded comic book style.

For example, in my Halloween piece, I approached it as I normally would.

This step is very effective and not very time consuming, but effectively hinders my creative process somewhat.

I really tried to color in the lines because Painter produces weird edges when you paint on a new empty layer. Kind of adding an unwanted "Burney" effect. I have tried to find a fix for this, but have had no success. So if anyone knows what I mean and knows how to fix it, please let me know!

I didn't really have an idea of the lighting scheme, nor did I know what colors I would have used. The color scheme was a happy accident, and I'm glad it turned out the way it did.

The brushes in Painter seem to lay on the color differently, and I have been trying to create a brush that mimics the Opacity Brush in Photoshop.

By trial and error, as well as pure luck, I came up with a watercolor brush that has the natural pressure opacity that I've been looking for.

Here is some of the preliminary color sketching of my latest piece.

As you should see, the colors aren't as smooth as they normally are, and there are a lot of weird additional bounce light colors mixed in with the suit. Thanks to the new brush, I was able to achieve this effect. The polishing comes much later, when the image's lighting becomes more readable.

My Attempt at the Manga Style

I have never tried my hand at the O'l Manga style art. I do love it, but I'm not a die hard fan. My favorite Anime films are Ninja Scroll, Akira and Cowboy Bebop. Pretty main stream stuff.

I've always wanted to try it out. The anatomy is pretty screwy, so it took a bit of work.

I'm not finished yet, so here is a preview. The title is going to be, "Awaiting Orders".

Coloring Book Art

My lovely nieces came to visit me from Winnipeg for a week. The oldest one is awesome because she loves my art. The other is too young to appreciate it, but I still love her.

She requested that I color one of the pages from her coloring book, and picked a simple fish picture, that allowed me to use my imagination.

It was really fun painting it in Painter, because I wasn't really thinking about proper lighting or smooth brush strokes. Just threw on some colors and went nuts with different brushes.

She was scared at first, since she doesn't like sharks. But I think she likes it anyway, since it's from her favorite uncle.

Slythe! Comin' To Get That Azz!

Just trying out a new style of painting in Photoshop. In this piece I'm just exploring the design of this character. Nothing much. I must have an idea of all the character's action poses before I can arrange them in an aesthetically pleasing composition.

Man this painting is going to be a monster! I've decide to repaint Lion O and Cheetarah, so the paint style matches everything else.

In this piece, I started with a really loose line drawing, laying out the basic shape, then blocked in the colors. I don't know how, but by adding lights in random places, made the shapes pop out and I think this is how I'd like him to look.

I've been on a mission lately. Waking up extra early every day, setting scheduled times to paint and draw. Hard to follow every day, but I'm surprised how well I've followed it.
Lately, I've been struggling with Painter 11. Trying to make an opacity brush that I've grown fond of in Photoshop. But, Painter and Photoshop are two extremely different programs, that aren't meant to mimic each other.
I sometimes run into a wall when I attempt to try to decide which to use when approaching a project.
I wonder if anyone else has the same problem.
Here's a little sketch I did today as a warm up.

Down Mexico Way!

Took some of my advice and started to do some more personal work.
Not Mexican, but I love the culture! It's funny, I had someone tell me that I looked like a Mexican!
This started as a little scribble, when I was trying to fire out as many daily sketches as I possibly could. The composition turned out a lot better than I anticipated, so while I was skimming through my sketches, I decided to pull this one out and do a rough under painting of the line drawing.
I took some colors scheme from a bunch of old Mexican towns. It doesn't look like much now, but I am committing to this one until it's finished.

Now, I just thought of the coolest thing! What if everyone who sees this picture, gives me a suggestion of what to incorporate in the final piece! Such as; A pair of Maracas, a Taco etc.

Fiiiiiiiiiiiiinally! This painting has been a son of a bitch bastard to finish!
I keep getting tied up on the small details of the painting, which causes me to spend far too much time on the piece.
It's funny, when I'm just screwing around, I know to just block that shit in, but noooooooo, it's gotta be perfect.
Here is a word of advice for aspiring artists, Block that shit in, then work on the details later!
If you spend too much time on a little corner of an image, zoomed in and fixated on details, you'll never finish! Or else, you'll just get bored and rush through the important parts...

Blastin' Zombie Butts... Part 2

Another drawing I did for the Zombie Killer plug. I've been trying to work the old comic style of drawing lately. Again, structure, proportions and background images are what I am trying to work on. Years ago, I used to think that,"Screw backgrounds and hair and feet! I can draw those things!" Yet I never really took the time to pay attention to them, so now I am paying for it. Although, I feel that if I can draw a pretty face and a well proportioned body, drawing perspective background images should be pretty easy. They have been so far.
With this picture, I started it out as a two inch thumbnail silhouette. I then scribbled out a basic image, much like the previous image. I have a bit of an eye for eliminating the lines that are not important. I scanned it and traced over the lines in Sketchbook pro, and traced over those again... a lot of tracing. Then the flats, and then the shadows and then the painting and then... etc.
I feel I need to post the process, because I don't do enough work that it is engraved into my brain yet. Like a drawographical log... maybe a Dlog?

Zombie Killin' SOB

Just finished this quick color over of a sketch I did yesterday. I got the idea from a fellow DeviantArt peer. I haven't posted much art lately, so here goes.
I scribbled together some lines in my sketchbook, then I scanned it and inked it in Sketchbook Pro. I love inking in SB pro, because I don't have to worry about smearing the ink, or running out of it. Some of the lines are difficult to execute though. Like trying to create a steady curved or oval object. It becomes shakey sometimes. I think that is because I'm so new to Digital inking, or inking in general.
Just gonna throw up each of the steps, to maintain my sanity...

I've been on an O'l school Ninja Turtles Kick this week! I remember when I was growing up in Winnipeg, nearly every summer, my family and I would take a road trip down to Grand Forks, ND. I remember we would get twenty dollars to spend as we pleased. I always bought either Super Mario or Ninja Turtles toys. I got some Ninja Turtle stickers once. These Ninja Turtle drawings are kind of a tribute to my childhood heroes.

Good O'l Eyegore!!!

I've had another art slump over the past few days, so I've resorted to painting over an old drawing.... Really old! I drew this bad boy back in the fifth grade. I was into drawing killer monsters and robots at the time, and if I can remember correctly, I was drawing this from an old "How To Draw Monsters" Book.
Seems like only yesterday. So I scanned it and painted over it in Photoshop. Let's hope I get my groove back!

Still workin' on this Cintiq. Trying to experiment with new techniques and styles. I find I have been gravitating towards the o'l Comic style art lately. I found that inking with the Cintiq in Sketchbook Pro is pretty sweet. I figure I'll save millions of dollars on Bristol board, sketchbooks, pencils and ink in the long run. If I ever decide to go the,"All Digital" route. Looks like that is where I'm headed.

I finished this one this morning. Good o'l Donatello. This began as a little sketch I did while working at Convergys in Winnipeg. I scribbled it out and attempted to render it out, then some cock sucker supervisor decided to walk by and say," Hey! That doesn't look very productive. Should you be doing that?" Since I wasn't busy, I figured I'd draw, but I gave in and stopped, for a few seconds... I quit that job shortly after. It was pretty much a bullshit job, like all jobs that don't consist of you doing whatever you want to and getting paid for it. One day though! I just keep on truckin'!
Just Juiced up the saturation a bit on the skin to get rid of the dull feel on this one.

Now for the purpose of Blogographing, I will post my step by step process that was taken to achieve the final result. Just a basic comic book style with a painterly look. The comic style art is how I began and I seem to gravitate to it every now and then. So I guess I'm going to keep doing it until I get bored.

I've been trying my best to get used to this new Cintiq. It really takes a lot of practice to get the hang of it. I was just screwing around with Sketchbook pro and Photoshop and whipped up this dumb sketch.
I just put the pen to the screen and scribbled this dumb thing. So I'm going to keep putting up crap until I get the hang of this damn thing!!!

Frustration leads to Success!

Just kept pluggin' away, and finally got past the block! I just discovered a wicked awesome blog today by these fellas from a company called CreatureBox . Awesome comic style work with amazing creativity! It inspired me to hit the paint immediatly! But I was side tracked by how smooth their line work was. I don't really enjoy line work in Photoshop, or Painter. One of their interviews, they indicated they used a program called Sketchbook Pro. I investigated it, then downloaded the software for my Mac. To my surprise, the program worked pretty sweet! I think it responds to my tablet better when sketching and inking. So I whipped together this piece. Just a quick sketch of that lovable character Borat. I kind of lost respect for him after that "Bruno" film. Not that there's anything wrong with that stuff (If you know what I mean ;), but it disgusted me. I had to was my eye balls after seeing that crap!
Anyway, threw together this piece in Sketchbook pro and PSCS4.

Hitting a Painter's Mental Block

Just trying to get over this painter's block that I just hit yesterday. It seemed like everything I was painting was just wrong. I don't know why, but it's not hard to get over. You just gotta keep pushing on! Frustration leads to progression. That's what I've learned over the years.
Here is the piece I've been working on. Just threw on the flats and some effects over a background. Not much, but it kind of makes it look a little retro. Like the old cartoon.

Woke up early today and started another film study. I am attempting to explore different brushes in Painter. I used the palette knife for this painting. Beginning to discover new possibilities with textures and strokes. I am interested in studying older films. I enjoy the grainy look and warm feel of the film.

Bad Dreams Environment 1 Hour Film Study

Here is another film study I did. Just an environment with a creepy house and a beat up old van.
Changed up my approach to this one. Blocked off all of the images as solid colors using the Polygonal lasso tool, and then painted them. I like the results.

St. Patty's Day Early Design Concepts

One Hour Film Studies

Recently I had the chance to speak with a wonderful artist by the name of Jeff Turley. Lately I have been at a stand still with my work. Mostly due to my work schedule and life in general. I have still been sketching and doing random stuff, but nothing to brag about. Mr. Turley introduced me to film studies. I know it may seem like a simple concept and I punched myself in the face for not discovering it earlier, but it is a wonderful new way to explore composition, color, temperature, values, proportion and all other components of what makes a good piece.
Each of the studies that I painted, were completed in exactly one hour. By deticating this amount of time to one piece allows you to focus on more than the main subject, but rather every component that makes up the scene. From the far background blurry images, to the middle ground images and then the foreground images. Every component begins to become just shapes and color blocks. I didn't focus on the small details until I had completed the majority of the piece.
From the bottom to the top, I was able to see a progression in each of the pieces. But I am going to continue to do these studies.

Started working on this piece again this morning.
It took the back burner for a little while, and it was bothering me, so I got fired up and began to tackle it.
Trying to arrange the pieces in the most eye pleasing way possible.
I have a few other projects that I need to work on for Valentines day and St. Patrick's day. Got a book I'm illustrating too.

Luigi Portrait Study

I've been experimenting with a few new illustration techniques that I have derived from a few of my favorite artists. It seems to make coloring a little more easy and efficient.
I took the initial sketch I did of Luigi and started off with the whole Dick in a box gag. But upon further examination, I saw more. Luigi had a serious look on his face. It looked as though he didn't want that box covering up his balls. So I decided to take it out and render him alone. In a serious, painterly manner.
I think it turned out well. I'll probably print this one out and hang it up for a while.

Wanna Give You Somethin' That's Been On My Mind!

Puppy Characture

I was so disappointed with my last coloring job, I decided to start painting a characture of my youngest puppy, Ava. She's about 8 months old now, but she's pretty crazy, and she will kill you. My oldest, Dafney, is pretty laid back in comparison. But she is a big barrel azz and kicks lil' Ava's azz sometimes. I didn't paint Dafney this time because she has a lot of different colors, kind of like a tiger. Ava is pretty cute, because she is so little, like a miniature Pitbull.
I threw this one together pretty quickly in Painter, about 15 minutes, with the smeary palette knife and oil brush. Painted from memory, with no reference.

Mobbin' In My Old School!

Anyone who knows anything about me, knows I love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Especially Raphael. I used to spend countless hours drawing them in my notebooks at school. I think I drew this one back in fourth grade. I was bored and decided to step back and get down to the basics of painting. I attempted to interpret the lines of the muscles that I drew. Being that I was so young, I had no sense of anatomy or proportion. I just drew what I wanted. I had fun doing it too. While I was painting this piece, I tried to keep my values down and tried to interpret the lighting the best I could in a short period of time.
I didn't set out to create a masterpiece, I just felt like scribbling out some color as fast as possible.
Drawn with pencil on lined paper. Colored entirely in Painter X.

Aaah yes. I remember the days when these guys were on SCTV. I loved staying up late on weekdays to watch it. They were so dumb, yet so hilarious! When the movie came out, forget it! That was even better! I think those guys had a great impact on Canadian culture. Hell, people in America still think we wear parkas and toques all year round, and say EH after every sentence. I love it though.
I scribbled this out the other day, and did a quick color scheme. I plan on painting completely, and let me say, it will be a masterpiece!
